Psalms 91:1-2
He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of Yahweh, “He is my refuge and my fortress; my God, in whom I trust.”
Context and meaning
Psalm 91 is the most-read protection text in the world, and it opens with a condition that is usually ignored: dwelling. It is not visiting the secret place of the Most High in emergencies; it is living there.
The image has concrete roots. "Secret place" and "shadow" evoke shelter in a climate of relentless sun and the right of asylum in a sanctuary. Then come four names for God in two verses — Most High, Almighty, Lord, my God — as if the psalmist were stacking titles to reinforce his confidence.
An honest limit is worth recording: this is the psalm the tempter quotes to Jesus in the wilderness, suggesting he throw himself from the temple. Jesus refuses, saying "you shall not test the Lord your God". The psalm promises refuge, not invulnerability on demand.
It is one of the texts most read at night, on journeys and in prayers for children. Read the whole chapter aloud before bed: it is sixteen verses.
