About the book of Psalms
Psalms is the Bible's prayer book — and the most read of all. It contains 150 poems written over centuries, attributed to David, Asaph, the sons of Korah, Moses and anonymous authors. The variety is its strength: there are hymns of praise, pilgrimage songs, royal psalms, wisdom poems and, above all, laments — about a third of the book is people complaining to God, which gives any reader permission to do the same. Here are Psalm 23 ("the Lord is my shepherd"), Psalm 91 (protection), Psalm 51 (repentance) and Psalm 119, the longest chapter in the Bible. It is the book quoted most often in the New Testament.
