Prayer against fear

For when fear arrives uninvited: a prayer to name it, hand it over and remember who is at your side.

Lord, I am afraid. I name my fear before you: (say what you are afraid of). It looks big, but you are bigger.

You said "do not be afraid" so many times in your Word — to Abraham, to Joshua, to Mary, to the disciples in the boat. And every time you said it, you gave a reason: "for I am with you". I hold on to that reason now.

Take fear out of the control room of my thoughts. May it not decide what I do, what I avoid and what I stop trying. Replace the fear with your presence. You did not give me a spirit of cowardice, but of power, of love and of self-control.

If what I fear happens, you will be there. If it does not, you spared me. Either way, I am not alone.

When I am afraid, I will trust in you. I repeat it until I believe it: when I am afraid, I will trust in you. Amen.
