New Year prayer

For the turn of the year: closing the year that passed with gratitude and forgiveness, and opening the one beginning with surrender and hope.

Lord, the year is ending and I come to you before it is over.

Thank you for the year that passed. For everything that went well and that I celebrated; for everything that went wrong and taught me; for the people who arrived and the ones who stayed. Thank you that I am alive to say this prayer.

I leave behind what needs to stay behind: the hurts that do not serve me, the guilt you have already forgiven, the plans that were not yours. I do not want to enter the new year carrying the old one.

For the year that begins, I do not ask that everything go well; I ask that you be in everything. Direct my steps. Keep my family. Give me work, health and peace. If pain comes, let it come with your presence. If joy comes, let it come with gratitude.

Do a new thing in me, Lord. May I know you more this year, love better and serve with more joy.

Your mercies are new every morning — including the first morning of the year. Happy New Year. Amen.
