Christmas prayer

For Christmas Eve dinner or Christmas morning: thanking God for the Child who was born, remembering who is missing from the table and asking for peace on earth, starting at home.

Lord, on this Christmas Eve (this Christmas Day), we stop to remember why we celebrate.

A child was born in Bethlehem, in a manger, because there was no room at the inn. Shepherds were the first to know. The Word became flesh and came to live among us. Thank you for coming so close — not in a palace, but where anyone could reach.

Bless this table and every person around it. Thank you for the food, the reunion, the laughter and the stories repeated every year. Remind us that the celebration is about you, not about what we bought.

We remember those who are missing: the ones who live far away, the ones who are working, the ones who have gone and left an empty place. Comfort those spending this Christmas missing someone. Visit whoever is in a hospital, in a cell, on a street or alone in a room.

Glory to God in the highest and peace on earth — and may the peace begin in this home, with forgiveness among us and doors open to those in need.

Merry Christmas, Lord. Thank you for Jesus. Amen.
