Birthday prayer

To pray for the person whose birthday it is — or for yourself — giving thanks for the year lived and asking for blessing on the one beginning.

Lord, today is (name)'s birthday and we thank you for their life.

Thank you for every year they have lived so far — for the easy days and the hard ones, for the people you placed on their path, for what they learned and what they became. You formed them, you know them by name and you have sustained them until today.

Bless the year that begins. Give them health in body and peace in mind. Give them dignified work, true friendships and a family at peace. Fulfill the good desires of their heart and protect them from the desires that would do harm.

Teach them to number their days, that they may gain a heart of wisdom. May this new year be one of growth, of forgiveness where needed and of joy — the kind that comes from you.

The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine on you and give you peace. Happy birthday. Amen.

To pray for yourself, replace "them" with "me" and say it aloud: it is a good way to begin your year.
