Bible verses for women

The Bible is full of women with names and stories: Ruth, Esther, Deborah, Mary, Martha, Lydia, Priscilla. And it has a famous portrait, in Proverbs 31, where the woman of valor is clothed with strength and dignity and laughs at the days to come. Peter speaks of a beauty that lies not in adornment but in a gentle and quiet spirit — not a muted submission, but a serenity that does not depend on approval. The verses on this page are for Women's Day, for Mother's Day, for a friend's birthday, for the church women's breakfast and for the days a woman needs to remember who she is. Choose one and write her name next to it: promises become more concrete when they have an addressee.

  1. Strength and dignity are her clothing. She laughs at the time to come.

  2. Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain; but a woman who fears Yahweh, she shall be praised.

  3. Let your beauty come not from the outward adorning of braiding your hair, and of wearing gold ornaments or of putting on fine clothing, but from the hidden person of the heart, in the incorruptible adornment of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in God’s sight.

  4. God is within her. She shall not be moved. God will help her at dawn.

  5. Who can find a worthy woman? For her value is far above rubies.

  6. Blessed is she who believed, for there will be a fulfillment of the things which have been spoken to her from the Lord!”

  7. A gracious woman obtains honor, but violent men obtain riches.

  8. Since you have been precious and honored in my sight, and I have loved you, therefore I will give people in your place, and nations instead of your life.
