Proverbs 3:5-6
Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.
Context and meaning
Proverbs 3 is a father's advice to a son, and this pair of verses is its practical summary. The structure is simple: two commands, one prohibition and one promise.
The commands are "trust" and "acknowledge him in all your ways". The prohibition is curious: "don't lean on your own understanding". Notice it does not say to switch off your brain — the book of Proverbs itself is a tribute to intelligence and planning. What is forbidden is leaning only on your own judgment, as if it were sufficient.
The promise is that God "will make your paths straight". The image is of a winding road being leveled as you walk it, not of a complete map handed over before departure. That changes the expectation: acknowledging God in your ways is a daily exercise, and clarity usually arrives in pieces.
It is a good text for big decisions — as long as you accept receiving just enough light for the next step.
