James 1:5
But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.
Context and meaning
The verse appears right after a passage about trials. The order matters: James speaks of difficulties that produce perseverance and then offers the practical resource for anyone in the middle of them — asking for wisdom.
What is promised is not generic knowledge, but discernment for what to do in this situation.
Two details stand out. First, God gives "liberally" — without rationing. Second, he gives "without reproach": there is no risk of hearing "you should have known that already". For anyone ashamed to ask, it is a direct invitation.
The condition comes in the next verse: ask in faith, without doubting, so as not to be like a wave of the sea driven by the wind. The image describes someone asking for guidance already determined not to follow it.
It is one of the texts most prayed before decisions and exams, and one of the simplest to put into practice.
