Joshua 1:9
Haven’t I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be dismayed, for Yahweh your God is with you wherever you go.”
Context and meaning
Joshua has just received the worst possible promotion: replacing Moses. The people are about to cross the Jordan into an occupied land, and the previous leader — the only one they had known — is dead.
In this first chapter, the command "be strong and courageous" appears three times. Repetition, in Hebrew literature, is emphasis. And each time it comes with a different reason: the promise of the land, obedience to the law, and finally presence — "for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go".
There is also a detail that often goes unnoticed: between the commands to be brave, God tells Joshua to meditate on the book of the Law "day and night". Courage here is not born of self-confidence; it is born of knowing what you lean on.
That is why this verse works so well at graduations, job changes and first days: it does not ask for bravado, it asks you to remember who is going with you.
