Context and meaning

Isaiah speaks to a small people surrounded by empires, with objective reasons to be afraid. God's answer is not an argument, it is a presence: "don't be afraid, for I am with you".

The verse has a sequence of promises in four beats, and the progression is worth noticing: I am with you (presence), I am your God (relationship), I will strengthen you and help you (capacity), I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness (security). It is as if each line answered a different fear.

"The right hand of my righteousness" is an image of a steady hand — the hand that holds someone about to fall, not the one that points in judgment.

This is one of the verses most often sent to someone facing a test, moving abroad, going through a loss or starting something new. It works well because it does not ask the person to stop being afraid by sheer effort: it gives an external reason for courage.
