Psalms 119:105

Psalm 119 is the longest chapter in the Bible — 176 verses arranged in 22 blocks, one for each letter of the Hebrew alphabet. Almost every verse speaks of God's Word from some angle.

The image chosen here is modest and precise. An ancient lamp, made of clay and oil, gave little light: enough to see the next step, not the whole road. That is exactly the promise — "a lamp to my feet" and "a light for my path".

This helps correct a common expectation. Many people read the Bible looking for a complete map of the future and end up frustrated. The verse suggests something else: enough light to walk today.

The path, in the psalm, is dark — there are pursuers, traps set and sleepless nights. The lamp does not change the terrain; it changes the possibility of walking it without stumbling.
