Ephesians 2:8-9
for by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, that no one would boast.
Context and meaning
This is one of the most important verses for understanding the Christian logic of salvation — and it is built to eliminate any margin for merit.
Three negatives pile up: not of yourselves, it is the gift of God, not of works. The reason is given explicitly: "that no one would boast". The aim is not to diminish human effort but to prevent comparison and religious vanity.
Paul writes this after describing, in the opening verses of the chapter, a state of spiritual death — someone dead does not cooperate with their own rescue.
But the argument does not end at verse 9. Verse 10 completes it: "we are his workmanship, created... for good works". That is, works do not produce salvation; they are its result.
It is a central text for Protestant traditions and widely accepted beyond them as a statement of the priority of grace.
