1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

Three short commands in sequence, at the close of a letter full of practical instructions to a young church under social pressure.

The most important detail is in the third: "in everything give thanks", not "for everything". The difference is decisive. No one is asked to give thanks for the tragedy, but to find reason for gratitude inside any circumstance.

"Pray without ceasing" also deserves care: it does not describe someone kneeling all day, but a conversation that is never closed — the possibility of picking it up at any moment.

The line closing the three commands gives the ground: "for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus toward you". It is one of the few places where the Bible explicitly says "this is the will of God" — and the content is joy, prayer and gratitude, not a specific decision.

It is one of the texts most used to start gratitude journals.
