Prayer for strength

When your own strength has run out: a prayer based on Isaiah 40 asking for the strength that comes from outside and is renewed.

Lord, my strength is gone. I have tried it my way, I have pushed, I have held on in silence — and I have reached the end of what I had.

You said that those who wait for you renew their strength, mount up with wings like eagles, run and are not weary, walk and do not faint. I am not running or flying; I am barely walking. So start there: give me strength to walk today.

Strength to get out of bed. Strength to care for those who depend on me. Strength to tell the truth, to ask for help, not to quit halfway through the task. Strength to forgive and strength to start again.

May I not confuse your strength with my stubbornness. Yours shows itself in weakness; mine, in the urge to prove something. I choose yours.

Strengthen my tired hands and my shaking knees. You are my strength and my song. Amen.
