Hail Mary

The traditional prayer formed by the words of the angel and of Elizabeth in the Gospel of Luke, followed by a request for intercession.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.

Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death.

Amen.

Where it comes from

The first part joins the angel Gabriel's greeting to Mary ("Rejoice, you highly favored one! The Lord is with you", Luke 1:28) and Elizabeth's words ("Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb", Luke 1:42). The second part is a request for intercession added by Church tradition over the centuries.

A note

The Hail Mary is prayed above all in the Catholic and Orthodox traditions, especially in the Rosary. We publish the text for its historical and devotional value and for its root in the Gospel of Luke; each reader uses it according to their own tradition.
