Numbers

The name comes from the two censuses that open and close the book, but the real subject is the wilderness crossing. Numbers records the journey of a generation that left Egypt and did not enter the promised land — not for lack of God's power, but out of fear, when the spies came back with a frightening report. It is an honest book about the distance between being freed and learning to live as free people: there is longing for Egyptian food, leadership disputes, water shortages and serpents. There are also unforgettable passages, like the priestly blessing of chapter 6 ("the Lord bless you and keep you") and the story of the prophet Balaam. It ends with a new generation ready to cross the Jordan.
