2 Chronicles

2 Chronicles continues the re-reading of the history, now from Solomon to the exile, following only the kings of Judah. The temple is at the center: its construction, its dedication — with Solomon's prayer in chapter 6 — and the reforms that restore it after periods of neglect. Hezekiah and Josiah get special attention for reopening the temple and restoring the Passover. The book contains a much-quoted verse, spoken at the dedication: "if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray... then I will hear". It ends with the decree of Cyrus, the Persian king who authorizes the return — an open ending, turned toward rebuilding.
