1 Corinthians

1 Corinthians is Paul's most pastoral letter in the sense of solving concrete problems: divisions over favorite leaders, lawsuits between believers, immorality, questions about marriage and celibacy, food sacrificed to idols, disorder in meetings, the use of spiritual gifts. Corinth was a cosmopolitan port city, and the church reflected it. In the middle of the answers stand two of the most-read texts in the Bible: chapter 11, with the account of the Lord's Supper, and chapter 13, the "love chapter", which interrupts a discussion about gifts to say that without love none of it counts. Chapter 15 is the New Testament's fullest treatment of the resurrection.
