John 14:6
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me.
Context and meaning
The line is an answer to a practical question. Jesus had said he was going to prepare a place and that the disciples knew the way; Thomas replies frankly: "we don't know where you are going. How can we know the way?"
The answer does not point to a method, it points to a person. Jesus does not say "I teach the way" or "I show the truth": he says "I am". The three words explain each other in a chain — the way to get there, the truth so as not to be deceived on the route, life as the destination.
The setting is farewell and consolation. Just before, in verse 1, comes "don't let your heart be troubled"; and after it comes the promise of the Holy Spirit. That is, the exclusive claim in verse 6 is made to calm frightened people, not to win a debate.
It is one of the texts most read at Easter services and Christian funerals, alongside John 11:25.
