About the book of 3 John

3 John is the shortest book of the New Testament by word count and offers a rare snapshot of everyday life in a first-century church. There are three characters: Gaius, praised for hosting and helping missionaries; Diotrephes, criticized for loving to be first, gossiping about others and expelling those who disagree; and Demetrius, commended as trustworthy. The central theme is hospitality, which in that context was mission infrastructure — without homes that received them, the gospel did not travel. The letter is also a reminder that leadership conflicts are nothing new: they already appear in the Bible, with names attached.
